The Mayans have a story of the agile yet plain hummingbird, Tzunuum. She was happy with her austerity until it came time for her wedding. No dress to be had, she became sad. So sad, in fact, that her friends decided to help. The flycatcher made a crimson necklace of his feathers. The spider spun her a veil of fragile gossamer. The others crafted a gown of saturated turquoise & brilliant red. When the wedding day arrived, Tzunuum was so surprised she could barely tweet her vows. Impressed with her humility, the Great Spirit declared she could wear her wedding gown for all eternity. And so she did, passing it on to every hummingbird after.
